During the first month, Mrs. Sybert’s third grade class completed a log of the phases of the moon. When the sky was clear they were able to observe what part of the moon was visible as it reflected the sun’s light. The class also learned about the importance of washing their hands. A parent did a presentation on germs as part of this experiment. They began their study of earth materials by using materials and activities from the FOSS kit. In math the class reviewed both addition and subtraction concepts as well as starting to work on multiplication facts. Mr. Selby, middle school math instructor, visited the class to encourage them to become the best math student they can be. In religion class the children were taught about the Bible and The Church (the people, not the building) and how they help us to learn about God. The students had several questions for Father Christiansen when he visited to review the parts of the Mass and the prayers they would be saying. They also had a course on Talking About Touching, beginning with safety issues such as walking on streets without sidewalks. The class also learned to write in cursive. The pupils will be using their skills in various writing activities throughout the year. The group just finished listening to Mrs. Sybert read the first book of The Boxcar Children and will continue on with book two. The children also bring in books from the library, home, or the classroom to read whenever they have a free moment or a period of silent reading. Parents should have them read aloud each evening.
