Welcome to second grade and a new school year.I look forward to many enjoyable times with you and your child. If you ever have any questions or concerns please contact me as soon as possible. If a conference is needed, we can set up a time to discuss your concerns.
Our specialist schedule this year is as follows:
P.E.:
Music:
Computer lab:
Library:
Art Appreciation :
Sharing will be held on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays during lunch.Every student will be assigned a sharing day.The students can share whatever they feel is important to them but I don’t want expensive items brought to school.I can’t insure they won’t get lost.If they want to share a pet they have to let me know three days in advance. The pet comes to school in the morning and is shared from 8:20 to 8:30 and goes home with someone.Pets can not stay at school.
BirthdaysIn the classroom, I acknowledge each child’s birthday by giving them a pencil, sticker and card.If your child wants to bring in a treat for the class please make sure there is enough for everyone and that the treat is easy to pass out.I prefer cupcakes to cakes; cakes are too difficult to serve in a classroom setting.Mrs. Griggs will continue the tradition of giving each child a free dress day to celebrate their birthday.Birthdays that occur in summer months will be recognized in June.I will inform the students of their dates to celebrate.
Homework will be sent home each night and returned completed the next day. There will be reading homework every night and math homework will be assigned when needed.I encourage all students to practice and memorize the basic math facts (sums 0 to 18).These are the math facts on flash cards.Second graders should also get real life experiences with money (counting, making change and buying things) and telling time.Talk to your child about the clock and schedules.Unfinished school work will be sent home to complete that night and brought back the next day.
Reading GroupsCurrently, we are testing the students and setting up the reading classes.I will send home notes as soon as the classes are decided.
If your child is in my reading class then…Spelling lists will gohome on Fridays and Mondays. The students will be given a practice spelling test on Mondays and final spelling tests will be given on Fridays.
Children in Mrs. Swift’s class may have a different schedule.
Behavior Management In my class I use a behavior chart to keep track of student behavior. Each day the child’s behavior is recorded on the “Staying on Track” form. This form is sent home on Mondays for parents to review and discuss with their child if needed.Parents please sign the form and send it back to school the next day.I will check to see that your signed it and if you have any comments for me.This has been the best and most immediate way to communicate with parents about weekly behavior. If a child’s behavior becomes a problem I will call his/her parents to discuss the problem.
