ENCOURAGE YOUR CHILD TO PRACTICE
Your student should be practicing their song, dance, skit, etc. EVERYDAY. Ask them to perform for you and the family. The more they rehearse, the better the show will be.
Destination Imagination is a creative problem-solving program in which students work in teams of five to seven students to solve a given problem. Problem solutions include script writing, costume and prop designing, and the ability to incorporate required elements into a team's final presentation. Team members learn to interact and problem-solve with one another. Meetings take place once a week for approximately 1 1/2 hours beginning in November. Closer to the competition date, teams may meet more often and for longer periods of time. The regional competition will be held in late February or early March. In the past it has been held in Pierce County.
For more information, contact Ellen Nickerson, kindergarten teacher and Destination Imagination coordinator, (360) 577-6760.

2008 7th grade award recipients & their families outside St. James Cathedral
Future Full of Hope
Each year, the Archdiocese of Seattle Catholic Schools Department holds a prayer service and recognition ceremony at St. James Cathedral for select 7th grade students who exemplify the identity and excellence of Catholic education.
There are four categories of recognition:
Leadership in Faith: The student demonstrates an explicit knowledge of the Catholic faith and an awareness of its influence on his or her conduct as a school leader. Leadership in faith can be shown in any area of school life.
Leadership in Academic Achievement: The student demonstrates excellence in academic achievement in any subject and encourages or assists others to achieve. Special consideration should be given to students who have produced outstanding projects as evidence of their achievement or if they have shown marked and consistent improvement in academic performance. In some cases, this award may be given for a team's achievement.
Leadership in Co-curricular Participation: The student participates with distinction in a co-curricular activity sponsored by the school and encourages others to do so. Special consideration should be given to an activity that is important to the school's mission.
Leadership in Community Building & Service: The student takes a leadership role in activities that build school community or that serve the local community. The student should be respected by peers for the quality of his or her leadership. This award may be given to two students, one who builds the school's community, the other who leads a community service project.
Students who qualified for the competition included:

To qualify for the competition, students take a geography test in their classrooms. The students earning the top two scores from each grade (4th - 8th) are eligible to compete.
VOLUNTEER ATHLETIC DIRECTOR: Jenny Isaacson is the Volunteer Athletic Director. She attends monthly Athletic Directors meetings with the Longview and Kelso public middle schools, as well as Three Rivers Christian School. Jenny is a graduate of Washington State University with a Bachelor's of Science in Physical Education and minor in Health Education/Coaching. She can be reached via the school office at 577-6760 or E-mail Jenny Isaacson.
Competition is held between the following local schools: Cascade Middle School, Coweeman Middle School, Huntington Middle School, Monticello Middle School, Mt. Solo Middle School, Three Rivers Christian Middle School, and Woodland Middle School.
PHYSICALS: Each player is required to have a current physical form on file in the school office. They are good for two years; if your player had a physical in seventh grade and is now an eighth-grade player, he or she does not need a new physical. Physical forms are available at all physician offices (including Kaiser).
COACHES:
VOLLEYBALL: Jenny Isaacson and Marnie Harris
GIRLS BASKETBALL: Duane Dalgleish
BOYS BASKETBALL: Ted Sprague & David Schatzel
FOOTBALL, WRESTLING & TRACK: All St. Rose students are encouraged to turn out for any of these sports in their neighborhood public school.
BOYS BASKETBALL: Boys basketball is a winter sport. Games are played in January and February. The St. Rose boys play a 7B schedule against other middle schools in Cowlitz County.
Boys Basketball Awards Dinner March 2 at 5:00pm at the Masthead
St. Rose School stresses the importance of being of service to others, whether it be at home, school, church, or in the community at large.
Middle school students are required to participate in six hours of service each trimester, and complete a service documentation form. (Download the Middle School Service Hour form).
Examples of all-school service projects include:
Pet Food Drive: St. Rose collects pet food in the spring for the Longview Humane Society. Over the past years we have received donations in pet food totaling over $5,000. The Pet Food Drive is organized by 1st grade teacher, Ms. Martha Bridges.
Food Drive: Every Thanksgiving, the school helps St. Vincent De Paul by collecting non-perishible food items for the poor. This has been a school tradition for over 20 years.
Coat Drive: For the last five years, there has been a coat drive during the fall. Coats collected must be in decent condition, may be any size, and may include regular coats, sweatshirts, and heavy vests. Competitions are held between classes, and at the end of the coat drive the class collecting the most coats gets an ice-cream party.
Sock Drive: Classes collect new or clean gently used socks, which are donated to St. Vincent de Paul. This year, more than 300 pairs were collected from the combined classes.
