7th GRADE

 

 

 MEET PAULA STEPANKOWSKY AND HOLLY MCSHANE...

 Paula will be the seventh-grade homeroom teacher and middle school language arts teacher in the mornings.  She is a recent recipient of a Master of Arts in teaching from the University of Portland.  Her graduate school teaching placements were at La Center High School and Pacific Middle School in Vancouver.  Teaching is a second career for Paula, who also has a Master of Arts in journalism from the University of Missouri and a Bachelor of Arts in English literature from Fort Wright College in Spokane.  She was a Pacific Northwest reporter for Dow Jones Newswires for 11 years, and she was a business/industry reporter for The Daily News in Longview for 11 years.  Paula is a longtime volunteer in Catholic schools and is the secretary and a founding member of the board of directors for St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic High School, which will open in the fall in Vancouver. 

Holly McShane will teach seventh grade social studies and religion in the afternoons.  Holly has a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy from Davidson College in North Carolina and has her teacher's certification from the University of North Carolina-Chapel HIll.  Holly has extensive middle-school experience in language arts/literature, math, social studies, religion, and electives as a teacher at Christ the King School in Seattle (seven years), Villa Academy in Seattle (three years) and St. Rose School (three years).  Holly is a 4-H horse leader in Colitz County and is actively involved in Babe Ruth baseball and St. Rose Catholic Church.  We are happy to have Holly back at St. Rose!

Middle School Langage Arts
Students learn grammar, composition and literature. In Language Arts 6 students learn the parts of speech, subject and predicates, complete sentences, sentence variation, the principal parts of regular and irregular verbs, subject verb agreement, pronoun agreement, usage, capital letters, and punctuation, vocabulary and spelling. In composition they learn descriptive, narrative and expository writing. In literature students learn to analyze short stories, poetry and novels.
In Language Arts 7, students review grammar and continue literary analysis. In composition, students review expository writing and learn persuasive writing.

In Language Arts 8, students demonstrate mastery in grammar and literature. They also learn formal usage, how to write a critical analysis, and how to write a reaction paper.

Sixth graders read Tuck Everlasting and Sounder; seventh graders read Bearstone, The Outsiders, and Where the Red Fern Grows; eighth graders read Lord of the Flies, Bless the Beasts and Children, The Pearl and To Kill a Mockingbird.
Former students and achievement tests scores indicate that students are well prepared for high school English classes.
Religion 7
In religion students study Jesus in the New Testament, The Mystery of God, and The Church and the Sacraments. In addition, they study the snynoptic gospels, John's Gospel, Revelations, and survey the Epistles and Acts.
By seventh grade students should know how to pray the Rosary, Nicene Creed, Prayer of St. Francis, the Acts of Faith, Hope and Love, and they should know the Corporal/Spiritual Works of Mercy.
Social Studies 7
The year is divided into trimesters. The first trimester students study European History, the second trimester Middle East History, and the last trimester Pacific Northwest History. Pacific Northwest History satisfies the high school requirement in the state of Washington.
