ART APPRECIATION

The Art Appreciation Program was begun by Marie Hauge of St. Catherine’s Parish, as part of her Master’s in Art degree from Gonzaga University.  It was started eight years ago with assistance from parent volunteers.  The program consists of month lectures/presentations on various art topics, each geared to the students' grade level.

Past topics have included:

  • Byzantine art
  • Renaissance
  • Impressionists
  • Surrealism
  • American artists
  • Individual artists (O’Keefe, Escher, Hopper, etc.)

Funding for the program is primarily from the proceeds of the annual Art Show, where student work is showcased and may be purchased by family and/or friends. This event is usually held in the winter, and each class chooses a famous art piece for their students to reproduce.

During the presentations, art postcards may be purchased by the students for $1.  The proceeds from these sales are used to purchase large art reproductions, which are used in the presentations.  To date, the program has been able to purchase approximately 125 reproductions.  Students receive three copies of the postcard – one may be kept, one that may be traded with another student and one that is donated to their classroom for display.
