Ø Rosemary’s Reflection
Dear Parents,
Soon we will be holding graduation ceremonies for our current eighth grade students. Families will celebrate the accomplishments in this important stage of their child’s life with simple or elaborate parties.
Entering high school is an exciting time for students. It can also be a time of doubt and anxiety. They are moving to a larger school environment with many new faces. The subject matter is unknown. They may wonder about meeting new friends and facing new teachers.
Parents can help with transition by offering encouragement and listening to their child’s experiences and expectations. Don’t dwell on your own experiences. Attend the orientation day, if offered at their new school. Try to seek out events that the high school sponsors. Let them know that many people feel apprehensive about changing to a larger high school, and that there will be people to help them adjust. Talk to them about how they can become involved…sports, clubs, etc. Discuss the effects of peer pressure and allow your child to contribute their views. Most important, let your child know that you trust them and that they can trust you. Keep open communication and assure them that you are available if things go wrong.
Some high school students may struggle with personal identity, fitting into a social group, peer pressure, and the new academic studies. They are also concerned with dating, driving, and wondering where they will go after high school. Your child’s peers can be very influential in you child’s life. Some children will do things in direct contrast to the beliefs parents have hoped to instill in order to be accepted. Yet peer pressure can have a positive effect. It can shape the direction of your son or daughter’s success in school. Encourage your child to be involved in positive activities, both during school and during their free time. Peers can also influence each other to keep their grades up, stay away from drugs, and become leaders in school.
Parents and their children should learn about high school graduation requirements and begin thinking about colleges. Consider the academic options offered, such as advanced placement courses, and programs such as art, music and athletic programs. Stress that the grades they achieve during their freshman year are as important as any other year when applying to colleges. Grades are cumulative!
The teacher and staff at St.RoseSchool are proud of our graduates and wish nothing but the best for them. They are beautiful young adults who have represented their school with pride, enthusiasm, and honor.
I am proud to announce that Paula Stepankowsky will be joining the St. Rose Faculty. She will be the 7th grade homeroom teacher and teach language arts to all middle school students. Holly McShane will be returning to St. Rose and will teach 7th grade religion and history and one of the afternoon electives. Both of these women come with a very impressive background that I will highlight in a future issue.
God bless you,
Rosemary Griggs
